The cover in this photograph is not from the original Popular Image Exhibition in the Washington Gallery of Modern Art in 1963, but rather from a reprint edition of 100 done on the occasion of a Warhol Cover exhibition at the Pitea Museum in Sweden curated by the noted Warhol and other artist cover collector, Richard Forrest. He is one of the most knowledgeable experts in the field and personifies the compliment, “A Gentleman and a Scholar.”
The original Giant Size $1.57 Each was released in 1963 in conjunction with the exhibition, The Popular Image, presented at the Washington Gallery of Modern art, from April 18 to June 2, 1963. This record is a collection of interviews with the artists featured in the exhibition, including George Brecht, Jim Dine, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, Andy Warhol, Robert Watts, John Wesley and Tom Wesselmann. Billy Klüver is listed as the publisher.
